Reading Love!

The Year 11 Co Arts 2016/2017 group has decided to continue the previous works of the Yr11 CoArts group - "The Reading Club" -  in hopes to continue carrying it out successfully as done before or even beyond that,  having re-branded the name to "The Puppet Express Train to Education".  The main objective of this project is to instill reading habits in kids from a young age.

We tried to convey this objective by storytelling accompanied by puppets and drama.  We hoped that by keeping the students interested in our puppet shows, they would read the books again and imagine the show in their minds as they read along. Before we started making our puppets, we were given advice from our librarian on how we should read the stories to the children.

We started with a show for the Year 1 and Year 2 students in our own school on the 18th October. Our project consisted of 4 puppet shows: Princess and the Pea, Froggy Plays Soccer, When Sophie Gets Angry, and the Gruffalo. We utilized two different classrooms where we had two shows running side by side and then the groups switching classrooms halfway. We succeeded in making the children laugh, fitting in with the time margin given, and promoting the library.

After showcasing the four puppet shows to the Year 1 and Year 2 of Mutiara we had countless positive feedback hence deciding to take this project externally. We organized a presentation with a local government school - SK 1 Kuala Ampang - to showcase this project on the 25th October 2016.

United, we managed to proceed with the project with ease and success whilst keeping to the main objective of the project. Not only did we get to present the four chosen stories but we also got to mingle with the younger ones of our community. Our day was filled with laughter and joy; many memorable memories were made that day.

As we were trying to encourage the reading habits in young children, we also had a small book drive to collect used/new books to donate to the school we visited, this was praised upon by the young aspiring students of SK 1 Kuala Ampang as well as from the teachers.

Hopefully they will enjoy the new editions to their library and we will continue to the best of our capabilities to continue contributing to their library. Overall, we wouldn’t have had been able to carry out this project without our fellow CoArts teachers, special thanks to all of them for guiding us through our journey.

Talent Show 2016

MIGS Annual Talent Show was held on the 3rd June 2016, organised by the Year 10 Community Arts Program. We raised awareness on the ongoing refugee crisis and all the money we rasied from ticket and food sales was donated to the United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees (UNHCR). We also personally extended an invitation to the leader of the UNCHR, Mr Patrick, to attend the show. On the day, he gave us a touching presentation about the existing crisis and what can be done to help.

As the leaders of the project, Shafiq and I were assigned a three-stage process that would eventually lead up to the actual talent show. The first stage focused solely on the auditions that were to be held on the 25th – 26th April. The second stage required the most time and effort. We spent weeks on the second stage. During these weeks everyone was busy; a few spent their time designing posters and tickets, some planning the timing of the event and the props needed, Didi and Zul who were our emcees on the day spent time writing their script and practicing while others organized the weekly food sales that happened every Tuesday and Wednesday leading up to the big day.

Stage three was regarding only the duties needed on the day of the talent show. This stage was when we executed all our plans from stage two. In Shafiq and I’s opinion, this stage was the most nerve-wrecking as we did not want all our efforts to go to waste. Everyone was working non-stop as either a bouncer, event coordinator, stage manager, emcee or at the food stall.
It was so rewarding to see that all the Year 10s efforts had not gone to waste on the day of the talent show. Each group did an amazing job hence giving the talent show its success. Despite all the problems we faced, such as the rainy weather resulting in the delay of the event and some props not working, we managed to overcome all.

MIGS Talent Show 2016 was a huge success and we are extremely happy to have been blessed with the opportunity of leading the event. It has taught us both how to work with people and how to organise a huge event. We both couldn’t have done it without the efforts of our fellow classmates and teachers involved. We hope that there will be many more great talent shows to come.

Internationalism- A Year 10 (2015/16) Co Art initiative

Our very first project was one in which we had to raise awareness on a topic that we felt was important to us. We, the students of Year 10, were given the freedom to come up with a few topics that we felt were important. The ideas were then presented to the rest of the class and a voting took place. Some ideas included ‘Happiness’, ‘Depression’ and ‘Famine’ among many others. We eventually settled with a topic that was global and easy to relate to: Internationalism.

We chose this topic because it was related to one of our school’s vision, ‘Respecting Differences”. In the present world good relationships between countries, races, religion, and people in general are necessary in order to live peacefully. Not everyone is the same, but it is our duty to make sure that everyone is treated indifferently, without prejudice.

The big day finally came, and all preparations were completed. It took a while before the teachers arrived, and the presentation began. The opening speech was presented by Adam Rais and me with a mash-up of ‘Black and White’ by Michael Jackson playing in the background. The first presentation was done by the Music group, who sang a Multi language version of ‘Come Back Home’ by 2NE1. The audience was amazed at their efforts to translate the lyrics. It was followed by the Games group, who presented and demonstrated interesting games from different cultures. The next presentation was from the Drama group, who presented a comedy drama about the importance of internationalism, as well as the negative effects of prejudice with an original plot. The following was an Art group presentation. This group showcased their artwork, which was a world map with three-dimensional, scaled-down monuments and landmarks from around the world. They gave information on each landmark and had a Q&A session with the audience. The final group to present was the Dance group. They performed to a medley of songs from different countries and cultures, such as American, Arabic, Indian and Korean. The performance showcased the similarities and differences between different dances, and they were all influenced by each other in some way. The presentation concluded with a speech by Mr. Guy, who shared his thoughts on our presentation.

Overall, the presentation was a huge success and I personally look forward to working on future Community Arts projects.

MIGS Thanksgiving Day, Dec 2015- A year 11 Co Art Initiative

Thanksgiving was a personal and heart-warming opportunity to give a group of less fortunate children a truly enjoyable night.

In conjunction with Children's Day, MIGS Thanksgiving was a grand sequence of events that set out to entertain and treat a group of less fortunate children and their caretakers.

After drawing out plans and mapping out the timelines we split into core groups that would focus on different essentials such as food and budgeting, games, music, stage management and so on. The event was spontaneous and although fast-paced and hectic; went by planned guidelines and followed the timing accordingly.

With performance practices, orphanage phone calls and stockpiling foodstuffs, MIGS Thanksgiving put us in many tough situations and served as a great learning experience for everybody.

At the end of the night cheery grins and goodbye waves were exchanged as the program packed up, each child went home with a quaint gift, ranging from football cleats to ribbons and accessories.

We hope to have more opportunities to help the less fortunate and give back to our local community.
