On
the 28th of January, the Y10 Community Arts held a water carnival at
the school hall, with the guidance of our teachers. This event was held in
order to inform and warn everyone about our daily use of water supply, teach
them how to sustain our water usage, and how it’s affecting our world. By doing
this, we arranged ourselves into four groups: the Polar Bears, Turtles, Aqua
Man, Corals and the Mermaids. Each group had a special booth set up so that the
students were allowed to walk around and see what each group was all about. We
had two hours to share our research to both Junior School and Senior School.
Every twenty minutes, a different batch of students rushed into the hall and we
had to repeat our presentation over and over again to the students, explaining
what this event is all about and why this event was taking place.
Our
group chose to spread awareness about the ways in which everyone contributes
towards global warming that is affecting the polar bears’ natural habitats. We
came up with the ‘newspaper game’ which was about folding and folding the
newspaper until it became smaller, and then trying to step on it without having
any of your feet sticking out. Before allowing the students to participate in
the game, we thoroughly explained why we were raising awareness for this cause,
and we also asked for their thoughts and opinions, as they had their own ideas
on how to save the polar bears too. This game portrays global warming causing
the ice to melt ruining the polar bears’ habitats. It’s basically putting us in
their shoes, creating empathy and hopefully making our minds set on how we can
help them. We handed out leaflets which contained facts about the polar bears
and why they are one of the most endangered species in the world. After they
had understood why we did this, they proceeded to play the game which was an exciting
experience for all of us, as we awarded the winners with either cupcakes or
brownies of their choice.
Overall,
it was a really successful event as each of us learnt something from this
event. We managed to spread awareness to both students and teachers, about
sustaining our water usage for the future. Moreover, we believe this carnival
was entertaining to us, and the students who came, as it was informative and
knowledgeable yet enjoyable. Each group had successfully explained what they
were trying to accomplish, and after the long preparations of putting this
event together, it was all worth it.
