Our Visit to the Sekolah Kebangsan Jenis (SKJ) Tamil School-Year 11 (2013-14)

On the 6th of November the year 11 Community Arts group organized a visit to the SKJ Tamil School, in Pekan Ampang. This project was inspired by the Wisdom Club. Our aim was to encourage the primary school students to passionately enjoy reading books.
We formed 6 groups, in which we all had to make a presentation to the students.
·                                                       Group 1: Puppet Show
·                                                       Group 2: Mythical stories
·                                                       Group 3: Traditional story
·                                                        Group 4: Cartoon story
·                                                        Group 5: An act based on a fictional story
·                                                       Group 6: Classic fantasy

Upon arriving we were greeted by the senior assistant, Mr. Arul. Each group took a respective class and prepared for their presentation. In total there were three classes whereby, two groups took a class. Each group was given half an hour to present.
Our visit to this school was a whole new experience. We were emotional on meeting the children from deprived backgrounds. Yet they were joyful and excited on seeing us. The year 1s were particularly happy with the Puppet Show and wanted more. Zainab, our reader, succeeded in mimicking several roles. The year 5, on the other hand were not as enthusiastic as the little ones. Group 2 told a Greek tale about listening to elders and not abusing freedom. They were very fascinated by the feathers that we used as props and were engaged by the story and the characters, particularly the monster played by Waei Jin. Group 3 told the traditional Malay classic, Bawang Putih and Bawang Merah. The children found the story very entertaining as there was some humor injected in it. Again most of the children loved the characters, especially Azlan, who played Bawang Putih. Group 4, 5, 6, also successfully managed to amuse the children with their wonderful stories, actors and props.
Overall, it was a really fun experience that has proven that learning does not stop at the walls of the classroom. The learning that took place was beneficial to both sides. We hope that the children took our message that reading is enjoyable and educational to heart and will carry the message with them into adulthood.

"What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet or excite you. Books help us understand who we are and how we are to behave. They show us what community and friendship mean; they show us how to live and die". – Anne Lamott
