Reading Love!

The Year 11 Co Arts 2016/2017 group has decided to continue the previous works of the Yr11 CoArts group - "The Reading Club" -  in hopes to continue carrying it out successfully as done before or even beyond that,  having re-branded the name to "The Puppet Express Train to Education".  The main objective of this project is to instill reading habits in kids from a young age.

We tried to convey this objective by storytelling accompanied by puppets and drama.  We hoped that by keeping the students interested in our puppet shows, they would read the books again and imagine the show in their minds as they read along. Before we started making our puppets, we were given advice from our librarian on how we should read the stories to the children.

We started with a show for the Year 1 and Year 2 students in our own school on the 18th October. Our project consisted of 4 puppet shows: Princess and the Pea, Froggy Plays Soccer, When Sophie Gets Angry, and the Gruffalo. We utilized two different classrooms where we had two shows running side by side and then the groups switching classrooms halfway. We succeeded in making the children laugh, fitting in with the time margin given, and promoting the library.

After showcasing the four puppet shows to the Year 1 and Year 2 of Mutiara we had countless positive feedback hence deciding to take this project externally. We organized a presentation with a local government school - SK 1 Kuala Ampang - to showcase this project on the 25th October 2016.

United, we managed to proceed with the project with ease and success whilst keeping to the main objective of the project. Not only did we get to present the four chosen stories but we also got to mingle with the younger ones of our community. Our day was filled with laughter and joy; many memorable memories were made that day.

As we were trying to encourage the reading habits in young children, we also had a small book drive to collect used/new books to donate to the school we visited, this was praised upon by the young aspiring students of SK 1 Kuala Ampang as well as from the teachers.

Hopefully they will enjoy the new editions to their library and we will continue to the best of our capabilities to continue contributing to their library. Overall, we wouldn’t have had been able to carry out this project without our fellow CoArts teachers, special thanks to all of them for guiding us through our journey.
