On the 31st
of October while many were out trick or treating, we brought smiles onto the
faces of our audience at the Deepavali Celebration run by us, the year 11
community arts group. Less than a month earlier we were handed the
responsibility of organising an event dedicated to the MIGS help staff. After
weeks of planning, the day came when teachers, parents and most of all the staff
themselves were seating in the hall awaiting the start of the evening’s
festivities.
We truly outdid
ourselves that evening by dressing up in our finest traditional Indian garb.
The boys were dressed up sharp and smart for the night, and the girls were
absolutely stunning in their colourful and glittery saris. The night kicked off
with a lively dance by the same group that performed during Talent Show last
year, an event also hosted by the community arts group. This was followed by a
simple yet sweet duet sung by the
housekeeping staff. Next, it was our time to shine. All of us danced our way to
the stage to entertain the crowd with our knockout Bollywood moves. But the
best was yet to come. Our community arts teachers Mr Ajesh, Ms Hannah and Ms
Farisya, took us all by surprise when they got up onstage to perform their
improvised dance. After ending the shows in a fit of giggles and laughter, we
ushered our guests to the dining hall where we personally served them their
meal. In true Indian style, we went around filling the banana leaves with
portions of traditional Indian dishes such as papadam, mint chutney, lime
pickles, dhal lentils and pumpkin curry, delicious and vegetarian, all prepared
by our lovely kitchen staff.
Like all
community arts events all proceeds made were given back to society.
