Global Citizenship workshop with Mr. Georges- Year 10 (2015)

Our school was given the chance to invite two teachers from Choate Rosemary Hall, which is all the way in America. The two guests are Mr. Georges and Ms. Eera Sharma. They came to join our Co-Arts class as they were intrigued by this subject which is rarely seen in other schools.

To begin with, two candidates from our class stood up and talked about what Community Arts is all about, our goals, our achievements and also some of the previous work done by the previous year students.

After this brief introduction, we began with the activities. Mr. Georges had planned for us some games, well rather tasks, to do. The first thing we did was a small game, just to warm us up for the next few events. He told us that he is going to say a few words and that if we think the word or words describe who we are, then we had to raise our hand up. He started shouting out words like “Expats”, “Malaysian”, “Muslim”, “Christian” and our hands keep going up and down and up and down. Some of us were rather confused but got the hang of it over some time. After the routine of putting our hands up and down was over, we were provided with a second task. This though was quite a unique task because we rarely see this type of task in school.

We were given sentences that were projected on the screen and were told by Mr. Georges that it was jumbled up and that it was to be ordered from most important to least important. The sentences had a theme all relating to the connection between us and the world around us. He then proceeded to tell us to get into groups and try to re-order the sentences. It was quite intriguing to see how different people perceive different sentences as being the most important to them. In the end though, we managed to agree with each other. We then continued to present our decided order to each of the other groups and we all had different orders. However in the end, there was really no order to the sentences.

Skipping to the end of the Community Arts lesson, we were finally given the final task. This task however is a big project. We basically have to create a poster or pamphlet for 20 years’ time for the parents who visit MIGS to see the information on MIGS and the building layout. Basically, we were required to think outside the box and to think beyond the present to see what our school can become in 20 years’ time.

These few events were very beneficial as we were exposed to a wider perspective of our surroundings. These activities made us realise the benefits of looking at the brighter side of things and looking ahead in our lives. It made us change our thoughts on what being a global citizen truly is, and how we should act to become a better global citizen.
